Welcome to the Kaansa website
Who are we?
We are a project to promote the Kaansa language. As such we work in the area of literacy and produce literature in Kaansa. We run literacy centres and various other activities with one goal: promoting the Kaansa language.
This site is first and foremost for the Kaan people of Burkina Faso, all ages, both sexes, wherever you live - in your native villages in the Southwest, in Burkina’s major cities, in the Ivory Coast or indeed in Europe or elsewhere in the world. If you are far away from home, we hope our site will remind you of your culture and language. Enjoy reading in Kaansa! If you read French but haven’t yet learnt to read Kaansa, click here for a useful guide to the Kaansa writing system that you can use for yourself. You’ll soon find yourself reading and writing Kaansa too!
We are of course delighted to welcome other friends here, whether Burkinabe or from beyond Burkina Faso, French speaking or English speaking.
You will find a variety here to suit your interests. You will find Kaan culture – dance, music, proverbs, news from the area, important health advice, some Kaansa literacy documents, short stories by a contemporary Kaan writer and the books of the Kaansa New Testament (first published in 2016.) We have also added the first portions of the Old Testament that have been translated.
We would be delighted to hear from you – let us have your suggestions, questions and feedback here.
Here's a Kaansa proverb which speaks to every one of us: it's here, number 4 on page 3
